Old The Werther Effect, Did you know @ 11-23-2005, 12:51 PM
#1

A stud done by David Phillips has been dubbed the "Werther effect" (after Goethe's novel The Sorrows of Young Werther.) After studying suicide statistics in the United States from 1947 to 1968, Phillips discovered that "within two months after every front-page suicide story, an average of fifty-eight more people than usual killed themselves" and that "this tendency for suicides to beget suicides occurred principally in those parts of the country where the first suicide was highly publicized and that the wider the publicity given the first suicide, the greater the number of later suicides" (146). The rate of airplane and automobile crashes is explained as an attempt by the copycat suicides--acting on the basis of social proof--to be more furtive about their purposeful death: for a variety of reasons, they engineer an accident rather than killing themselves directly, and they make sure that the accident will be lethal! So powerful is the effect of social proof, if the publicized suicide is a young person, there will be young people dying in accidents for the weeks following the story.

The explaination for the increase in accident fatalities seem a bit odd to me. I think (and I can not prove this) that a suicide triggers something in the collective life which done is reflected in the subconcious of individuals.

So they're saying the werther effect is: death by suicide influences people's
subconcious....thus making certain individuals more likely to do the same;
but only in cases that are extensively covered by the press? Hmmmm...
wouldn't that be the same as saying certain kinds of music, influence people
to kill: or, people who watch horror movies; are more likely to comit violent
crimes. It all seems subjective to point of view. Even certain books, like
Crime and Punishment, could be an influence in that way. Ah, a study in
the human reasponse to media, interesing. I think the intent to comit
suicide would already have to be present, regardless of wether there were
outside influences. Someone wouldn't just read, or hear about it; and say,
"Hey, I think I'll try that." Speaking from personal experience, I know when
I thought about it; it was about my state of mind and how I saw myself at
that time, not about what I watched or heard. Anyway, guess that's all I have
to say.
