| Studio eBay-ed - Posted by Denz on Tuesday, December 14 2004 |
It won't fit under the Christmas tree, but the studio where rap superstar Eminem recorded his star-making hit "My Name Is" will go up for sale Wednesday on the Internet auction site eBay.
The 700-square-foot Studio 8 in Ferndale, located on Eight Mile near Woodward, was used by Eminem in 1997 to record his CD "The Slim Shady LP." The CD was released in 1999 and has since sold nearly 5 million copies.
"The recording studio is still intact, but the equipment is not part of the sale," said David Giltner, senior vice president of Grubb & Ellis, a full-service real estate firm in Southfield that's listing the property. "It's in great shape and was recently renovated."
The building, owned by producer A.J. Abdullah, will be auctioned in eBay's commercial real estate section for 30 days. The minimum bid is $215,000. Abdullah, who couldn't be reached for comment, is spending more time in New York and decided to sell the studio, Giltner said.
Abdullah helped Eminem record "The Slim Shady LP." He lived in a second-floor apartment there during the recording sessions. The 1,500-square-foot building was dubbed "The Bassment" after Mark and Jeff Bass, who also helped produce the album.
The Bass brothers have worked on Eminem's other CDs, including last month's release, "Encore," which has sold close to 2 million records. The latest CD also was recorded in Ferndale at 54 Sound and FBT Studios.
Eminem's real name is Marshall Mathers III. He grew up in Macomb County and currently lives in a 29-room mansion in Rochester Hills. |

| Stevie Wonder slams Em - Posted by Denz on Tuesday, December 7 2004 |
Soul veteran Stevie Wonder has hit out at Eminem for ridiculing Michael Jackson in a music video, accusing the rapper of being "hypocritical".
The singer said he was "disappointed" with the controversial Just Lose It video.
Wonder says, "Kicking someone when he's down is not a good thing.
"I have much respect for his work, though I don't think he's as good as (late rapper) 2Pac. But I was disappointed that he would let himself go to such a level.
"He has succeeded on the backs of people predominantly in that lower pay bracket, people of color. So for him to come out like that is bulls**t." |
