Ok alot of people have been saying Eminem is fast becoming a pop star rather than a hip hop artist! What is your views on this?

I think the reason why some ppl say this is because they have an impression that if you sell alot of records real fast and get to number 1 then you are a "pop star" and hip hop artists are supposed to be slightly not as popular as most artists.
I find it hard to explain what I mean but basically it seems whenever an artist becomes popular in the charts the underground seems to attack them saying they have turned "pop". How is hip hop supposed to grow if it becomes pop when it's popular

Your views?

well some say he is pop, but I think they mean popULAR.
Well of course he is popular, he is well famous, and many ppl like him. I mean just cuz you are a rapper, it doesn't mean u can be too good, right?

I mean just cuz you are a rapper, it doesn't mean u can be too good, right? but alot of people say his music has become more like pop music than hip hop with songs such as "the real slim shady", "Halies song", "without me" and "stan" not to mention a few others. I still say he is hip hop but it seems to me like Eminem is getting a rep as a pop star

Eminem is still hip hop.....he just does a different "style"......he wouldn't sell records if he didn't make catchy songs that appeal to a wide amount of people.....

I think it's quite ignorant how people instantly attack artists because they consider them pop.....I mean, isn't it every rappers goal to become famous and rich......I mean you wouldn't do it for a living to stay underground and earn fuck all money would you? ;)

What people don't realise is Eminem is MADE to do songs like Without Me and Real Slim Shady..

Hmm... I've thought about this myself... Eminem is certainly more "popish" than say Nas and Xzibit, but he's still Hip Hop... he has catchy songs that appeal to younger fans, but his lyrical skills prove that he's one of the best MC's out there. I think the media hype has helped him get this "pop rep". How many times have you seen Em's mug on the cover of bubblegum tennie mags? Numerous of times, and he's become an idol of 13 year olds all over the world... Many Hip Hop Heads don't wanna listen to someone that his little sister "adores". Rappers tend to lose some of their "cred" when they become too famous. It's bullshit to think like that, cuz he's still skilled at what he does even if his fanbase is below average.

I'd say that Eminem is both pop and Hip Hop... Eminem has become a product, like it or not... Some say he "sold out", but how can you avoid that when you leave the underground and achieve such fame? Em is a part of a multi-million industry, and has many powerful moneymakers behind him... do you remember the "Eminem dolls"? Just another chapter of exploiting his fame and making more money while they can. These sort of things will make him more pop than the average rapper in my opinion, but he will still always be Hip Hop...

" I'd say that Eminem is both pop and Hip Hop... " <-- I'd say you're right, though I think he's more hiphop than pop. He makes these catchy songs to sell more records. Honestly I think he'd sell records anyways, but to sell as much records as he does he probably need those songs. But at the same time he's a talented MC. If you know hiphop, you know he's got skills. Noone can take that from him. And saying him not being hiphop, that would be silly..

This may sound a lil corny...but this is how I feel....I don't classfy music...I like all kinds of music and to me music is music..it would matter if eminem was pop, hip-hop, country, or rock if it sounds good then it's good. Music is just music...it shouldn't have to be classified...it's like a sterotype if you think about it....

he's definately as hiphop as it get's but it disturbs me that he's releasing his first singles that is obvioulsy made for getting him as much attention as possible, and getting a bunch of teenyboppers singing along to it... it's not the music he makes otherwise, and it's not a coincidence that the first single is always the one most shocking and "sing-alongy" :D

Everyone's lead single is specifically designed to appeal to their fan base. If it wasn't they wouldn't have a lead single.

Even anti-commercialism, and anit-pop MC's specifically design their lead track for their target audience. That's a commercial track, because it's designed to be popular and sell - no matter the consumer market.

Em' is starting to get less and less hip hop everytime he spits. It's like he doesn't even MC anymore, he just writes catchy songs. The 16 is getting more and more uncommon.

I mean... Even at the very peak of his stardom, 2 Pac was an MC above all else and only increased his lyrical and mic skillz as he became more marketable.

Em's peak was '00. His projected mindstate has been a mixed bag since then. Is he some song writing martyr for free speech and teen angst, or is he an ill-ass MC who can flow whatever's on his mind? It's starting to move away from the latter...

thats true, all of the first singles off his albums are the catchy little songs that appeal to the not so true fans, even now, with 'My Band', it got all sorts of teeny boppers catching on to it, heaps of people who stated 'i hate rap' we're saying 'omg d12's my band is so cool, im going to by the album'

they think that all of their songs are going to be like that, and then when they listen to the darker, and i personally think better, songs on the album, they're shocked, 'this isn't like without me at all! This CD sucks!'

but eminems record company dosent care, they've sold another record, thats all they care about, so they get the people who like pop music and the people who are the real fans to buy the cd, thats how they get their mammoth record sales
