This is a song about a young rapper who battles and shit like that, who had to make the choice between his girlfriend (Sarah, who leaves him) and rapping. He makes the wrong choice and finds that he loses both rap and the girl.
The first verse may sound irrelevant to the topic, but it is displaying how the young rapper is putting rapping first and the relationship with the girl is not mentioned until the last bar of the first verse, which is too late because she tires of his rap aspirations and leaves him.
The hook is a sample from the Phil Collins led Genesis track "Thats All", which suits the song because I chose to use the beat of That's All as well.
Chorus/hook (Phil Collins)
Just as I thought it was going alright
I found that I’m wrong when I thought I was right
Always the same, its just a shame. That’s all.
I could say day and you’d say night
Tell me its black when I know that its white
Always the same, its just a shame. That’s all.
verse 1 (me)
I’m leaving this place but I know I won’t go
Can tell from your face that your hating my flow
Because I’m unique while you seem recycled and cheap
A gulf in class and you can’t take the leap
But in the streets people are staring at me
Sensing defeat your tempers flaring at me
And I can’t feel a thing from my head to my toes
When she throws the ring in my face and instead she goes
Chorus/hook (Phil Collins)
Just as I thought it was going alright
I found that I’m wrong when I thought I was right
Always the same, its just a shame. That’s all.
I could say day and you’d say night
Tell me its black when I know that its white
Always the same, its just a shame. That’s all.
Verse 2 (me)
Truth is I love you but its either you or the rapping
I was stupid, when you left my heart started gapping
Until it broke and I couldn’t have feelings when I wrote
Stuttered when I spoke and at every battle I just choked
Until I was on my own, and feeling quite blue
Couldn’t even go home because it reminds me of you
Thought I had the choice, I can’t have one without the other
But I lost both because I couldn’t tell a girl that I loved her
Chorus/hook (Phil Collins)
Just as I thought it was going alright
I found that I’m wrong when I thought I was right
Always the same, its just a shame. That’s all.
I could say day and you’d say night
Tell me its black when I know that its white
Always the same, its just a shame. That’s all.
Verse 3 (me)
Sarah, I love you but now your out of my reach
I said I held nothing above you, I should have practiced what I preach
Would have been happy and saved myself a lot of stress
But now its nothing but “what ifs” and its making me depressed
This mess is my yoke and I’ll never be released
Instead of spending time with you I was tending to my beats
Took you for granted, enchanted by rap star aspirations
I let you be supplanted so its my fault you ended our relations
Chorus/hook (Phil Collins)
