i dont understand how people can write a song/poem without a beat or a tune to work with...can someone guide me on the basics of how to achieve the talent to be able to do such a thing please!

Yeah, it usually comes natural, you don't really have to think- you just write it!!
Before I write a poem I usually just think, then I think words that ryhme....then I think of how I can say what I am trying to say and just making a couple ends rhyme: 4 lines: I do a rhyme end of line 2 & 4....5 lines : I do a ryhme every other line....
I usually don't do it to any type of beat. WHenever I try I always find it harder to write. I think I'd have to throw a beat in after if I was writing music! LOL I dunno if that would work, but I can't rap, just write poems! LOL

I feel that poems sound better when they ryhme, but I've seen poetry that is just deep and emotional and doesn't ryhme and that's good too. Just my opinion. :)

Take a poetry class! Really. :) That'll at least help you understand how to write them, and you just gotta provide the words.

Sometimes you take a tune or beat that already exists- all songs are other songs one person told me once- and write your own lyrics to it. if you want to add a tune or beat later you can create your own from the lyrics you wrote and not use the original.

I don't believe that all songs are other songs.....maybe if it's an artist that can't live up to the standards of what they are doing! lol

No offense, but there's really nothing to 'figure out'. It's kindof the same thing as asking someone "How do I make a graphic?" How can someone else tell YOU how to do something that just comes from your gut. For most people that write poems it's a matter of expression on how that person is feeling at that particular moment in time. It's all in the gut. Most of the time it comes from when said person is in a fucked up mood, or something bad just happened, it evokes feelings, and those feelings are easy to put down. Like Detroit girl (sorry I dunno your name LOL) said they don't always have to rhyme, that's a personal choice, I've seen plenty & they don't always rhyme also. If you sit down & think about it, it's not going to work.. you'll be sitting there all day without a word on the paper. You have to just let it flow out of you. Like for example:

The snow comes once a year.
For me it's all year round
coming & going it does not
It comes & it says
Just one more time, that's all I need
The power of it, is so easy to see.

blah blah blah lol.. I mean that's just something I came up with while typing your response, from past shit that went on in my life. Point: Let it come natural, otherwise it's not going to work.
